Pristella maxillaris is a vary popular tetra for some very good reasons. The flag-like dorsal and anal fins makes the fish very easy to see, even in a dark aquarium. They eat almost all prepared aquarium fish foods and thrive on it. Clean water is always important, but they are not overly fussy when a water change is missed. They are bulletproof, easy on the eyes and won’t cost you a stack of money. And while they can be a little rambunctious in the tank among their own kind, they rarely tear a fin or cause damage to one another. There is a variety of this fish where the skin is translucent and you can see the inner workings of this fish. With a trade name of “X-Ray Tetra”, there is an implication that you can see through all of them, but that is not our experience.
