Overview:
Bumblebee Gobies have always been popular due to their bright colors, bold patterns, and cute size. However, until recently, there has always been a problem keeping this fish: They require brackish water. That is until this species, Brachygobius xanthomelas, came on the scene. This species comes from freshwater environments that are fully separated from the ocean and does not require any salt in its water. Finally...all the cuteness we love in a fish that thrives long-term in freshwater aquariums!
Setup Considerations:
These inquisitive fish will appreciate plants, wood, rocks, and other decorations which they will stick to with their pelvic fin suction cups. They like to explore nooks and crannies looking for food and appreciate having lots of small caves and crevices. This will help them escape any aggression or hierarchy disputes and they will each claim a little hole as their own and retire to it when they want to rest. Also, these fish have large mouths for their small size, so be careful when choosing tank mates.
These fish come from fairly still waters and don't appreciate too much flow in their aquarium.
Diet: Carnivore
We've never gotten these to eat prepared foods well, but they eagerly consume frozen foods...especially frozen bloodworms. And, of course, live foods are consumed with relish (not the condiment.)
