Live Hornwort - Ceratophyllum demersum
one large handful - enough to loosely fill an 6x4 inch bag with water (without damaging the stems)
An excellent plant for beginners and for low tech systems. It typically grows free floating and will not root in the substrate, but it can be anchored with plant weights if desired. It has “horns” of thin needle like leaves that fan out around the stem. Under bright light it can develop darker green or crimson coloration. It can be propagated easily by dividing the stems.
Hornwort is excellent in breeding and shrimp tanks; Its dense clusters of fine leaves provide good hiding for fry and babies and the fast growth does well in reducing nitrates.
*Note on pests*: I remove bladder snails and duckweed any time I see them in my fish room. They should not be present on any plants I ship (or own). But be it weeks or months between sightings, like a bad case of herpes they seem to show up unexpectedly. I recommend you rinse and inspect any plants (including these) before placing in your tank as an extra preventative measure. There may be Ramshorn snails, as they are present in most tanks.
