Rainbow Goodeid

Characodon lateralis, Los Berros

Out of Stock

You are considering a young pair (M+F) of critically endangered live bearers.

Characodon lateralis is a small river

fish endemic to Central Mexico.

When adult, they can reach a length

of 2-2.5 inches long. Intensity of color

varies from location and maturity.

These cold-water fish are listed as

critically endangered by the

International Union for the

Conservation of Nature, (IUCN) and

the Goodeid Working Group (GWG).

Habitats include a series of micro-environments located below the waterfall known as El Saltito

in the Upper Rio Mezquital Basin in both Durango and Coahuila. These localities include ‘Los

Berros’, ‘La Constancia’, ‘Amado Nervo’, ‘San Juan’, and ‘Nombre de Dios’. Unfortunately, due to

pollution and invasive species encroachment; populations of this species have greatly

diminished. At last report, in 2018; these fish could only be found in nine localities.
