Melanotaenia nigrans

The first rainbowfish ever known to science, these have a long history in rainbowfish lore. Being so well known, you would think they would be easy to find. However, they are not common at all, at least not in the USA.

This strain is derived from brood stock obtained from breeders in Germany.

I like them because, as adults, they develop bold black margins on the anal and dorsal fins which gives them a sleek, dressed up look. These are young fish and don't show the color yet, but they will be stunning as adults.
