Freshwater fish have many colors. Males grow up to 4-5 inches. Females are smaller and grow to about 3 inches. Both sexes have a long stripe from caudillo fin to mouth, and pink to deep red abdomens, intensity of these change during courtship and breeding. Dorsal and anal fin bear golden eye spots. Juveniles are not sexes until 6 months of age. They are egg layers and become very territorial during breeding. They prefer heavily planted tanks and can tolerate many levels of water hardness. Will do just fine in a community tank.
